Australia gives us several excellent exotic wood species including Australian Spotted Gum and Australian Cypress.
Australian Spotted Gum is a tree that is popular for its durable and workable lumber. The bark of the spotted gum is spotted and it annually loses its bark in irregular sections. The wood gives off a slight citrus aroma. Hardwood made from this tree is usually light brown to deep reddish brown in color.
Australian Cypress is a wood with moderate hardness and one of the few types of softwood used in flooring. The appearance of this wood is striking when installed. It has a very earthy, golden, straw-like tone and is often dotted by knots. The wood is very easy to work with, though it can be brittle. Due to oxidizing and the effects of sun light Australian Cypress unfinished flooring can often darken and take on amber tones.
