PurpleHeart, Sucupira, Jequitiba and Bubinga

Some species are known for their very unique colors like PurpleHeart, Sucupira, Jequitiba and Bubinga.

PurpleHeart, like Bloodwood, is named for its striking color. When the tree is initially cut the center of it, or the heartwood, is a dark brown but quickly this color changes to dark purple. This is the part of the tree which is so sought after and can provide your home with unique natural purple hardwood flooring. This type of wood is also very hard and dense and resistant to damage. In order to maintain purpleheart woods unique color a sun resistant finish is highly recommended.

Sucupira as hardwood flooring is very beneficial for the home. The wood is very durable while at the same time being resistant to fungi and decay. The wood is a dark reddish-brown color and has a good amount of luster to it. While Sucupira is difficult to work with, it polishes easily and takes well to most finishes.

Jequitiba originates predominately from South and Central America. The wood’s colors range from a light, straw-like brown to that a dark pinkish brown. The wood is easily worked with and it holds a very nice finish. This wood is also very good in high traffic areas and resistant to mold and moisture. Care must be taken during the nailing process due to the fact that jequitiba tends to split.

Bubinga is an easy wood to work with. The gluing and nailing of the hardwood during installation can prove difficult though, due to gum pockets. Bubinga is a very useful type of wood and in flooring it provides the home with a durable and termite resistant addition. Bubinga exhibits dark rosewood like color and occasionally shows dark, even purple colored streaks. Besides flooring Bubinga is sometimes used in archery bows, harps, and even car interiors.
