Two of the very popular species sold are Santos Mahogany and Tigerwood.
Santos Mahogany is a unique hardwood. While it is very hard and difficult to work with, it takes very well to sanding and skilled craftsman are able to apply a nice natural polish to the wood. When freshly cut, Santos Mahogany gives off a spicy scent which is why the tree is often used in flavoring, perfumes and balsams. As hardwood Santos Mahogany has a beautiful reddish brown color and a lustrous shine.
Tigerwood gets its name for its often dramatic contrasting color scheme and the dark streaks present when cut. The wood is relatively easy to work with and is easily polished. One thing to be concerned with regards to Tigerwood is the drying process. It is a very difficult wood to dry without damaging and should only be done by experienced craftsmen.
